Top Things to do Before Moving House

We understand that moving house can be extremely difficult, time-consuming and stressful. Therefore, we have created a checklist to help organise your items for moving house using a self-storage unit.

Start Decluttering

Several weeks before your scheduled move, it is best to go through the decluttering process to organise your belongings and make the transition to your new home smoother. This will not only reduce the volume of items you need to pack and transport but also helps you start fresh in your new home without unnecessary clutter.

As you go through each room, categorise items into four main groups:

• Keep: Items you want to bring with you to your new home because they are useful, valuable, or sentimental.

• Donate: Items that are in good condition but no longer serve a purpose for you.

• Sell: Items that hold value and could fetch a reasonable price which could help you invest in new furniture and items needed for your new home.

• Discard: Items that are broken, damaged beyond repair, or simply no longer usable. Dispose of these responsibly.

Buy Packing Supplies

Packing up your home properly requires careful planning and the right supplies to ensure that your belongings are safely transported to your new home. Here are some packing supplies you'll need:

• Sturdy Cardboard or Plastic Boxes

• Bubble Wrap and Packing Paper

• Permanent Markers

• Packing Peanuts and Foam Inserts

• Packing Tape

Pack Non-Essentials and Label Boxes

Starting to pack non-essential items a few weeks before your move is a good way to gradually prepare for the transition without disrupting your daily routines. This phase of packing focuses on items that are not essential for immediate use or daily living, allowing you to prioritise and streamline the packing process efficiently.

These non-essentials can be packed away in a self-storage unit before your move-in date, and taken out of storage when you have settled into your new home. Reducing the number of items you need to deal with on your move-in day will save you time and stress – and moving costs too!

When labelling your boxes, remember to include the contents of the box and the room it will be unpacked into.

Packing Non-Essential Items:

1. Books and Magazines:

• Collections: Pack books, magazines, and other reading materials that you can do without until after the move.

2. Decorative Items:

• Artwork and Wall Decor: Safely pack wall art, mirrors, and decorative items that adorn your home but are not essential for daily living.

• Seasonal Items: Christmas decorations, Halloween costumes, and holiday and party paraphernalia that won’t be used until after you have moved.

3. Home Office Supplies:

• Files and Documents: Pack paperwork, files, and documents that you won't need immediate access to during the final days before the move.

• Desk Items: Safely pack office supplies, electronics, and desk accessories that are not essential for day-to-day work if you are someone who works from home.

4. Personal Collections:

• Collectibles: Safely pack collections and personal items that are on display or stored but not essential for daily use.

• Sentimental Items: Pack sentimental items and keepsakes that you want to transport carefully to your new home. Putting these into a self-storage unit will ease your worries of items getting lost or broken on moving day.
